Lander girls rout Jackson after loss to Star Valley

Feb 13, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets Sports Editor

Lander Valley High School finished its girls basketball home schedule for the season by pounding Jackson 63-42 Saturday afternoon at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.

The Tigers dropped a 61-52 decision Friday night to conference leader Star Valley to open their weekend homestand. The split leaves LVHS in third place in the Class 3-A West conference at 8-3.

"The game with Jackson was must win because we can't afford to lose any more," LVHS coach Spike Robinson said. "We need to finish second or third in the conference, because we want the best seeding for the regional tournament."

LVHS plays at Cody this Friday night to start a three-game road trip to end the regular season. Cody beat LVHS a couple of weeks ago in Lander.

Jackson win

The LVHS girls raced out to a 7-0 lead and kept the early pressure on Jackson, building a 14-7 score on a Mallory Swenson field goal. Shanda Post knocked in a 3-pointer for a 23-13 cushion in the second quarter.

"We were playing a little fast in the first half, and we weren't getting quality shots like we needed to get," Robinson said.

In the second half, Post found her range from the outside on back-to-back 3-pointers to make the scoreboard read 36-21.

Keesha Rowan put the game out of reach in the middle of the third quarter on a field goal at 41-22.

"In the second half, the girls slowed down enough that they made the extra pass and got quality shots every time," Robinson said. "We were knocking them down."

Post paced LVHS at 20 points, and Kristi Ragan finished with 16.

The Lady Braves took control with the Tigers quickly. The visiting squad was in command at 16-8 after the first period.

The two squads each scored 13 points apiece in the second quarter. Star Valley was in front 29-21 going into the third quarter.

The Tigers trimmed the lead to 32-30 on a Kristi Ragan 3-pointer. Ragan then tied it at 32-32, but Star Valley quickly went up back 38-32.

In the final period, LVHS climbed back into the game on a 3-pointer from Ali Ragan at 46-43, but the Lady Braves kept their cool and secured the nine-point win.

Lexi Erickson, Hailey Greenwood and Bailey Brog scored 14 points apiece for Star Valley. Kristi Ragan netted 18 points for Lander. Post had 14.
