Conference split for Cougar girls
Feb 13, 2012 - By Randy Tucker Staff Writer
Wind River's girlss plit games with Class 2-A Southwest opponents Big Piney and Kemmerer at home this weekend.
The Cougars came from behind Friday night to edge winless Big Piney 38-35. On Saturday, the Cougars fell to Kemmerer 57-52 behind an ugly first half that saw 32 combined fouls called.
The split moves the Cougars to most likely a third place seed in the West 2-A Regional but could finish as high as second if the final games between Shoshoni, Wyoming Indian and the Cougars fall into place.
It was an unbalanced performance for Wind River Friday. Defensively the Cougars played perhaps their best team defense of the season but offensively, nothing went right in the basketball game.
Head oach Justin Walker's offense generated dozens of point-blank shots, but nearly all of them sailed long or clanked off the side of the rim.
Big Piney took an early lead on seven points from senior forward Baylee Colton and built an 11-6 lead after one period.
Brett Groesbeck hit an off-balanced turnaround to open the second, and Amanda C'Bearing misfired a 3-point attempt just badly enough for it to bank in from the front and the game was tied at 11.
Tory Thoman hit a follow shot, and the game seesawed for a few minutes. Josee Vogel's short jumper gave the Cougars the lead at 17-15, and Wind River rolled on an 8-0 run with Shaylee Lonedog, C'Bearing and Vogel hitting a flurry of shots in the final 30 seconds of the half.
The run ended as the buzzer sounded on a 12-foot jumper by Sarah Shafer.
Big Piney clawed back into the game, cutting the lead to one at 28-27 as Wind River's offense sputtered.
The Cougars were stellar defensively, even generating a 10-second backcourt violation at 2:01.
Big Piney closed to two points on three different possessions but couldn't hit the final shot to tie the game.
The Cougar offense fell completely silent in the final three minutes of the game, but Big Piney couldn't do much better. Shafer closed the gap to 36-35 with 3:03 remaining. Lonedog hit both ends of a bonus free throw with 32 seconds remaining to preserve the win.
"Our offense didn't work but we played well defensively," Walker said.
