Feb 13, 2012 - By Randy Tucker Staff WriterFast or slow, the outcome was the same Friday night in Pavillion, as Wind River remained atop the Class 2-A Southwest with a 52-36 win over Big Piney. Add Saturday's 71-56 win over Kemmerer, and it sets up a much-anticipated showdown with Wyoming Indian for a chance at an uncontested conference title.
Big Piney ran a delay, slow-motion offense for the entire contest, holding the score down in hopes of upsetting the high-scoring Cougars.R00;But the only upset came in the fans as they watched the Punchers methodically pass the ball on possessions that routinely lasted over a minute before taking a shot.
In one second-half series, Big Piney passed the ball 21 times before finally missing a shot that led to a quick Wind River transition basket. Then it was back to the slowdown.
"It's hard to get any offense going when all they want to do is pass the ball," Wind River head coach Tony Selph said. "It did give us a chance to work on our half-court trap."
The Cougars opened the game in familiar fashion, with Tyson Lone Bear draining a trey just 15 seconds after the opening tip. Roger Wagon added another a minute later. Joe Tidzump hit a layup, and the Wind River led 8-0.R00;
With a blowout looming again, the Punchers played even more deliberately. Wagon picked up three quick fouls and left the game until the second half, and the Punchers kept it close, taking only point-blank shots after patient passing.
Wind River held a 10- to 12-point lead through most of the game, but a flurry in the third on 3-pointers from Jesse Brown and Lone Bear with another by Brown in the fourth were the difference.
The Cougars conclude the regular season hosting Wyoming Indian this Friday, Feb. 17.
