May 31, 2012 - By Joshua Scheer, Staff WriterHer store sells previously owned clothing, furniture, tools, knick knacks and kitchen items.
Riverton resident Pansy Hillman is opening her own second-hand store as an extension of her past life: holding large garage sales.
She said she knew she wanted to open her store when her yard sales started getting taxed.
Hillman said she usually had only three or four a year but was told that was too many.
On March 12, she opened Pansy's Second Hand Choice in a large facility at 767 E. Sunset Drive.
The store consists of four separate rooms. The main room, the first one entered when coming through the door, is full of clothing and miscellaneous knick knacks, Hillman said.
Down a small hallway on the left is a room with shelves lined with small kitchen appliances and utensils.
Across the hall is a third room with furniture, including a selection of bookcases, which Hillman said is one of her biggest sellers.
At the end of the hall is a fourth room that houses other larger furniture as well as tools and other random items.
She said she tries to keep love seats and couches in stock but they sell quickly.
Hillman said she loves the space and credits her landlord for helping the store get started.
In the past, she and her husband, Tom, have had second-hand stores in Casper and Lyman.
She said it took about a month to get everything ready to go for the Riverton store.
"We hit a lot of auctions," Hillman said.
She said she will continue to go to auctions to maintain her inventory, and she also accepts donations.
"The donations from Riverton have been just awesome," she said. "For it not being a nonprofit organization, they put up a lot for us."
Residents often bring items left over from garage sales. Hillman said if anything is donated that she can't use, she will get rid of it for the donor.
She doesn't turn anything away.
"That way they keep donating," Hillman said.
She also works to make sure everything is clean.
"All our clothing is washed before it goes out," Hillman said, noting that she takes the clothing to her own home for washing.
Hillman grew up in Riverton, left for some time, and returned in recently to be with family. She works two other jobs.
Her lease with the store's location is for a year, and she hopes to stay in business beyond that.
Pansy's Second Hand Choice is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The store can be reached at 856-7600.
