The Rock Springs Lady Tigers scored the final 14 points of the second quarter and were off an running to a 64-26 win over the Riverton Lady Wolverines Saturday in Rock Springs.
With the loss, Riverton (0-6, 1-19) remains winless in the Class 4-A West while Rock Springs (13-6, 5-1) remains in second place in conference standings after weekend play.
Sheridan Smith and Amy Woodward were Riverton's top scorers with eight each, and Hanna Svilar added six.
"We came out and played well in the first quarter. Then we just fell apart. We had more turnovers in the second quarter than maybe we've had all year. It's a team thing, and everybody has their name on it. Positively, we rebounded well. We have a tendency, when things go don't go well, individually and collectively to get down on ourselves," Riverton head coach Ron Porter said.
Riverton led 6-0 early.
"Sheridan Smith played well, as well as she has played all year. Amy Woodward played well too," Porter said.
Riverton finished the game with more turnovers, 30, than points, 26.
"You're not going to win basketball games doing that," Porter said.
Riverton will be back on the practice court Monday and, according to Porter, everything the Lady Wolverines do will now be geared to their March 1 first-round Class 4-A West regional tournament game.
"They need to take ownership and think positive thoughts. Hosting a regional tournament is a great advantage, and we want to take advantage of that. We will try to continue to improve and find what we are most comfortable with offensively and defensively. We will continue to look forward and not look back," Porter said.
The RHS sophomores and junior varsity teams both won in Rock Springs Saturday.
