Jun 6, 2012 - UW Sports InformationLaramie, Wyo. (June 6, 2012) - The University of Wyoming men's basketball team has announced it will travel to Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on Aug. 5-11, on a foreign tour that will see the Cowboys play four exhibition games against Canadian universities.
UW starts the Battle of the Border tournament versus the host University of Calgary Dinos at 6 p.m. on Aug. 7, before squaring off with the Mount Royal University Cougars at 7 p.m. on Aug. 8. The Cowboys have an off day, before returning to action against the Dinos at 8:15 p.m. on Aug. 10 and concluding play versus the University of Alberta Golden Bears at 10:30 a.m. the next day. All games will be played on Calgary's campus in the Jack Simpson Gym and all times are Mountain.
The NCAA permits basketball programs one foreign tour every four years, as UW last utilized the opportunity in 2006 to visit the same destination. Additionally, the NCAA grants teams up to 10 practice sessions prior to leaving the country.
"We lost six great seniors to graduation from last year's squad, so the opportunity to take a foreign tour is very beneficial for our young program," UW head coach Larry Shyatt said. "The practices and trip give our team a jump start to growing together and preparing for the upcoming season."
The Cowboys earned their first 20-win campaign since 2003 with a 21-12 record last season, but saw six seniors, including three starters, complete their eligibility. UW will welcome three freshmen and four transfers this fall on a 14-man roster that features just three seniors and two juniors.
