Jun 8, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorMitchell Baker of Dubois was getting a little worried when had hadn't received a phone call during April to play in the annual Shrine Bowl football game.
The invitation from the Shine Bowl officials to play in the all-star event arrived in the middle of May.
The contest is for the top football players in Wyoming from the six-man, 1-A, 2-A 3-A and 4-A classifications.
Kickoff for the game is 7 p.m. on Saturday at Natrona County High School.
"Some of my friends had already gotten the call that they were going to be on the Shrine Bowl team," Baker said. "I got the call late. I'm really excited to be on the team."
In the fall, Baker helped the Rams make it to their first-ever six-man championship game. Ten Sleep beat the Rams 54-31 for the title at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie.
"I think that it's really awesome to play in the Shrine Bowl football game," Baker said. "I didn't get to play 11-man last year because we played six-man. Just being able to make a transition into 11-man football has been a lot of fun. "
Baker is scheduled to play in the slot back position in his final high school football game.
"It's a mix between a receiver and a running back," Baker said.
Baker, Shoshoni's Dalton Linnan and Tanner Simpson of Lander are going to represent Fremont County from on the North team.
Linnan will play defensive tackle in Casper.
"We have some really good offensive lineman, or he would play there as well," Baker said. "Dalton is really good at blocking up holes." Linnan is the 2011 Fremont County Lineman of the Year.
Simpson is going to play wide receiver position. Simpson was the Fremont County Player of the Year in the 2011 season.
"Tanner is an amazing receiver," Baker said. "He is going to be an big asset to the team."
In the Shrine Bowl history, the North has 18 wins and the South has came out on top 17 times. There has been three ties. The series started in the 1974. The North outlasted the South 34-28 in the 2011 game.
