Awareness of elder abuse an important issue

Jun 13, 2012 - Kelly Wicks, Riverton

Editor:

It's an unfortunate fact that elder abuse is a growing problem due to the increasing population of elderly individuals who require the assistance of others.

This type of abuse may be difficult to recognize because of the victim's shame, fear, or being unaware of exploitation. Elder abuse is defined as mistreatment of elderly individuals whether through physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, intimidation, exploitation, or abandonment. Elder abuse can occur in care facilities, a relative's home, and in the elderly persons own home.

If you are concerned that this is happening, it is important to seek help. To report any type of elderly abuse contact: Wyoming Department of Family Services (800) 457-3659; Local law enforcement; Emergency-911.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15. Protecting our seniors from abuse begins with each one of us being vigilant on behalf of elderly people.
