Jun 15, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorRiverton has four girls teams, the most ever, in the ninth annual U.S. Energy Fastpitch tournament Friday through Sunday in Riverton.
Riverton has squads in all four divisions, the Under-10, U12, U14 and U18.
There are 25 teams from across Wyoming in the tournament.
The games in pool play and early bracket play are 75 minutes. The title games have a limit of 90 minutes.
Games will be played on the Martha, Everett, Jellis and Williams softball fields.
"This is the first time that we have had four Riverton teams ever in the tournament," tournament director and U.S. Energy manager Mark Stone said. "There is just a little more interest this year. We have some parents that want their kids to have a chance to play competitive softball."
There is no admission charge to the public for the softball games. Pool play games started on Friday night and continue Saturday.
The single-elimination bracket play is scheduled to start on Sunday.
"There will be some great softball played," Stone said.
The championship games are slated for Sunday afternoon.
Riverton, Rock Springs Storm, Gillette Heat, Gillette Blue Jays and the Casper Strikers are in the U18 division.
"We are a pretty young team," Stone said. "Our pitching is inexperienced, but we have some potential."
Kiyana Martin (ShoshonI), Bri Siebert (Powell), Schuyler Davis (Lovell), Courtney Hazelton (Casper) and Kaitlin Hillhouse (Casper) join eight Riverton players.
Hazelton is the No. 1 pitcher on the roster. Martin is No. 2 on the pitching chart, but she will be attending basketball camp this weekend.
"Courtney has been playing a long time," Stone said. "She keeps you in ballgames. She throws a good fastball and changeup."
Tylyn Caines also is in the pitching rotation for U.S. Energy.
Kaitlyn Wells is the new shortstop. Siebert plays second base and Hannah Soll is the catcher.
Sheridan Smith anchors the outfield from center.
"She is pretty solid," Stone said. "We will have other players fill in.
Dayna Zertuche, Jade Hernandez, Rachel Rapp and Kendal Krumland round out the Riverton roster.
Stone said the Gillette Blue Jays are the favorite in the U18 division.
"They are pretty solid," Stone said.
Riverton's U10 is managed by Brad Wilson. Jenny Wildcat is the U12 manager.
"We are really excited to do this tournament," Wilson said. "We have wanted to play in a tournament like this for a couple of years." Riverton will be playing against Rock Springs Storm, Gillette Blue Jays, Vernal, Utah, and Green River.
"We will see stiffer competition in the tournament," Wilson said. "The tournament will make us better all around."
Teams in the U12 division are Gillette Heat, Casper Chaos, Rock Springs Storm, Gillette Blue Jays, Cody Pride and Green River.
Sarah Jennings is the manager for the U14 coach.
"They have been together a couple of years," Stone said. "They are pretty solid.
The Douglas Dynamite, Lander, Rock Springs, Gillette Blue Jays, Cody Pride and the Rock Springs Flame are in the U14 division.
