Top-rated track hosts motocross races this weekend

Jun 15, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Bo Kasper, Sheldon Buckingham and Jake Lemley are the top Fremont County motocross riders scheduled to race Saturday and Sunday at a High Plains Motocross Association event.

The track is located three miles west of Riverton on Paradise Valley Road.

All three of the riders are Riverton residents. Buckingham was the 2011 HPMA Adult rider of the year.

Motocross league officials are hoping the two-day will bring in close 200 riders for the race. The HPMA is made up of riders from Wyoming, Montana and Colorado.

The HPMA series started last month in Gillette. The riders have been to Casper and Rock Springs.

The race on Saturday and Sunday start at 9 a.m. The gate fee for the public is $5.

Top track

The Riverton track was named the best HPMA track of the year for the fifth straight year.

The track has been awarded the top spot in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

"Our goal was to maintain the track for all riders," Fremont County Motocross racing secretary Heather Buckingham said. "It's fun and exciting for all riders, not just the big boys."

The Riverton track and Rock Springs track tied for the top spot. Riverton won the award on a coin flip.

"People in Fremont County are dedicated to motocross," Buckingham said. "Our riders are very close. We work together."

The Rock Springs race was held last weekend.

"Rock Springs is very dedicated," Buckingham said. "If you won't have a decent track then you won't bring in riders. If the track isn't safe then you won't bring in riders."

The track is nearly to 1.2 miles long. Buckingham said there will be a different track layout for both days. This will be the first year track officials have had a different track on Saturday and Sunday.

"We are curious to see how that works," Buckingham said.

Races are five laps.

"The boys and girls better have endurance to ride it," Buckingham said.

Buckingham said the most popular classes are the pee wee and the open outlaw.

The pee wees are for the beginners and the open outlaw is for the pros. A new class is the open amateur.

"That is where you put the 250 and 450 bikes in the same class," Buckingham said.
