Jun 17, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorRiverton put together some low-scoring games to place second in a two-day tournament for traveling 13-15-year-old teams June 9-10 in Powell.
Riverton posted a 4-1 record in the two-day, 10-team tournament. Riverton beat Cody B (10-8), Greybull (9-5), Powell A (7-4) and Lovell/Cowley (10-3).
The Cody A team beat Riverton 8-4 in the title game. Josiah Washington, David Gard, Devin Matsen, Teron Doebele, Josh Oaks, T.J. Paulsen, Baylor Beers, Reed Axthelm Tyler Landis and Steven Reinig played for Riverton.
"All weekend long our bottom half of the lineup got things going for us," Riverton manager Cody Beers said, referring to Gard, Matsen and Paulsen.
In the seven-run victory for Riverton in the semifinal game vs. Lovell/Cowley, Ryan Axthelm got the win on the mound.
"Lovell had done really well all weekend," Beers said. "We hit the ball well in that game."
In the title game, Riverton took a quick 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, Cody scored four runs against Riverton starter Josh Oaks. Cody never gave up the lead.
Riverton had two subs the entire tournament. Riverton has a total of 16 players on the traveling team, but five were gone for different reasons.
"We were tired by that fifth game," Beers said. "The kids just kept on playing better and better together."
Riverton stands at 5-3 on the season. Riverton went 1-2 a couple of weeks ago in a home tournament. Riverton fell to Rawlins twice but beat Lander.
Riverton will play an additional four games this month. Riverton Babe Ruth officials are making plans to hold a season-ending tournament at the end of June. Riverton has four teams in the league and Lander two.
The tournament will start Tuesday, June 26, with a pair of semifinals at 5:45 p.m. and 8 p.m. The finals are Wednesday, June 27, at 6 p.m.
