Riverton to field two Little League all-star teams

Jun 29, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Riverton will host Lander on Monday, July 9, in a doubleheader at Ron Saban Baseball Complex.

Two Riverton Little League all-star teams have been formed for postseason play.

Riverton will have a 9- to 10-year-old all-star squad and an 11- to 12-year-old team. In 2011, Riverton advanced to the state semifinals of the 11- to 12-year-old division before it fell to Laramie in Gillette. Laramie went on to win the state title.

Riverton also lost to Laramie in the 9- to 10-year-old division's state championship game. Mike Fisher will be the manager for the older team. "The all-star team is always a very good team with a lot of good players on it," Fisher said. "It's so much easier to coach them when they already know what to do. You are just going to fine tune things instead of teach people the basics." The postseason starts in a best-of-three game series with Lander.

Riverton will host Lander on Monday, July 9, in a doubleheader at Ron Saban Baseball Complex. The two teams will play Tuesday, July 10, in Lander, and the third game will be Thursday, July 12, in Lander. The winners of the series will be a No. 1 seed for the district tournament. "We will have to work on some of our hitters that have not been hitting the ball well," Fisher said. "We have a couple of people that are slumping. We will also work on our pitching rotation." The district tournament is July 18 to July 20 in Cody. The top two teams from both age divisions advance to the state tournament.

Older squad

The 11- to 12-year-old all-star team includes Kyren Higgs, Matt Fisher, Hayden Wempen, Brodie Roden, Dalton Lassiter, Ridge McCoy, Cody Frazier, Peyton Rees, James Hampton, Dillon Fabricus, Kobe Matsen and Jaren Draper.

The team was selected from the A's, Cardinals, Cubs, Rockies and the Yankees. "It was pretty easy to pick the team this year," Fisher said.

"We got the 12 best players out there. We did have a couple of other people that we could have gone with. We had lot of good choices. We will have a good team."

Shane Lassiter and Scott Fabricus are the assistant coaches for Fisher.

Younger squad

Members of the Riverton 9- to 10-year-old all-star team are Jereko Martinez, Kendric Muehler, Kaden Kellner, Dillon Lange, Brock Hinkle, Cameron Schoening, Konnor Gaston, Vincent Brown, Damon DeVries, Treyson Draper, Ridge Briggs and Aquilo Friday.

The manager of the squad is Jeremy Martinez. Jason Muehler and David Kellner are his assistant coaches.

The team is made up of Angels, Diamondbacks, Giants, Orioles, Royals and the Twins of the minor league division.
