Jan 31, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets Sports Editor

Central Wyoming College finished the first half of the Region IX North women's basketball conference season with a pair of victories.

The Rustlers start the second half after a 98-70 victory over Little Big Horn College Saturday night at Rustler Gym.

CWC stands at 2-6 in league play and 9-10 overall. The Rustlers return play Wednesday night at Northwest College in Powell.

"Hopefully, we will be able to close out some wins in the second half and see if we can't get a little bit of position in the Region IX bracket,"CWC women's coach Serol Stauffenberg said.

The Rustlers face nationally ranked Casper College Saturday night in Casper.

Good win

"I thought that we moved the ball pretty well on Saturday night," Stauffenberg said. "We played better in transition on offense and defense. We were able to get into our offense quicker."

CWC's Courtney Patterson took advantage of the ball movement and finished with game-high honors at 28 points. Porsha Wadsworth scored 16 points, and Jacki Nicholson ended with 14.

CWC won the rebounding war at 58-29. Brynlie Nielsen pulled in nine rebounds. Emily Smith and Patterson both had six rebounds.

"We talked to a few kids about hitting the offensive boards," Stauffenberg said. "Some of them stepped up to the challenge."

League standings

Northwest College won the first meeting with CWC on Dec. 7, downing the Rustlers 49-41 in Riverton.

"This is one of the teams that we could end up being tied with," Stauffenberg said. "We are a different team. We made some changes on our offense."

Northwest sits at 11-10 on the season and 3-5 in league play.

Casper College is first with an 8-0 record. Sheridan College stands second at at 7-1. Miles Community College, Western Wyoming Community College and Gillette College are both 5-3.

Dawson Community College is 1-7 and Little Big Horn College had a tough uphill battle at 0-8.

The winner of the Region IX North division will host the Region IX tournament at the end of the season.
