After running a CrossFit gym in Lander for a year, a group of fitness enthusiasts decided to expand their business to Riverton.
The new CrossFit location, 735 Sunset Plaza, hosts two classes a day, Monday through Friday.
"CrossFit incorporates functional movements that are varied," said partner Shaylynn Brasel. "Functional movement is something you could use the rest of your life."
It works on expanding and strengthening basic movements. Brasel gave the example of air squats without weights. This is a movement that everyone uses that could come in handy when someone is 70 years old and could have trouble getting up from the toilet.
According to the brand's website, it is a "strength and conditioning program."
"Our program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive," the website states. "Our specialty is not specializing."
Brasel said CrossFit was originally "geared toward military, police and firefighters."
"We create intensity," she said.
The workouts are rapid-fire and timed. For those in police-like lines of work, this creates a readiness for spontaneous, intense activities, like chasing and tackling a subject.
In fact, Brasel said a few Riverton police officers take the classes.
But she noted that CrossFit is also for the general population, adding that in Lander there are many schoolteachers who participate.
Brasel said the speed of the workouts has initiated some nationwide concerns about safety.
"The No. 1 goal in our gym is to always have correct form," she said.
New gym members are required to go through training to learn correct form before they are allowed to do the intensity portions of the workout.
Each workout is made up of exercises in three categories: gymnastics movement, weight training and track and field.
Gymnastics includes activities like pushups, pull-ups and the more advanced handstands.
Olympic-style lifting is part of the weight training aspect.
Running is the primary track and field exercise currently used in Riverton, but Brasel said she'd eventually like to incorporate rowing machines and stationary bikes.
The workouts change week-to-week and day-to-day.
"We want to make sure we're constantly varying," Brasel said.
This ensures no one muscle is overworked while also providing a full-body, unpredictable workout. Brasel said it is not random but strategically planned by the instructors each week.
Workouts total one hour, with significant amounts of warm-up and cool-down exercises. The intense portion lasts between 5 and 15 minutes, Brasel said.
Brasel said she and her husband, Adam, have been doing CrossFit for about three years. They started instructing out of their garage in Lander.
"We decided to try and make a business out of it," Brasel said.
The Lander gym, which currently operates at the Wyoming Life Resource Center but will move in August to the former Wildflour Bakery site on Main Street, opened in May 2011. Classes grew and word spread that people in Riverton were interested in starting.
The couple, along with Jason and Brittany Cox and Aaron Bertagnoli, opened the Riverton gym at the start of June.
There are spots available in Riverton, but Lander has a waiting list.
"Nobody is designated to a class time," she said.
Memberships can be purchased to attend a set number of classes per week. Unlimited memberships are also available.
