College skier Cartwright wins Lander Half Marathon

Jul 8, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

George Cartwright had a mindset on Wednesday before the annual Lander Half Marathon: He was going to cross the finish line in first place.

Cartwright kept his focus and broke away from the pack midway through the 13.1 mile race to win it in a time of 1:20.57. Cartwright beat 143 runners in the field to take the title in his hometown.

"I was very pleased with my time," Cartwright said. "It was four and a half minutes faster than I did it last year. It was a good time. I thought that I could even go faster."

Last year Cartwright finished in the runner-up position to former Lander Valley High School standout runner Luke Bromley.

Cartwright is a cross country skier at Northern Michigan University.

"I have been putting in a lot more hours this year," Cartwright said. "I had some injuries this past ski season. I wanted to take it to another level of focus this year."

Former Wyoming Indian High School standout athlete Caleb Her Many Horses and current University of Wyoming runner was on the top of the list of contenders for Cartwright.

"I knew that Caleb was going to be fast," Cartwright said. "I thought that maybe he would beat me."

Cartwright and Her Many Horses were neck-and-neck at the start of the race.

"I just decided to go for it at five miles," Cartwright said. "His pace was pretty slow, and he kind of dropped off."

The decision to pass Her Many Horses was the momentum changer for Cartwright.

"I went around him and never looked back," Cartwright said.

Her Many Horses finished second in a time of 1:23.47.

"I know that Caleb is really good at 5ks and now 10ks because he is running cross country at college," Cartwright said.

Cartwright said his training efforts the last few months paid off.

"When I train I go out for a long time," Cartwright said. "I put in a lot of hours. I run two or three hours at a time. I figured in a longer race maybe that would be his breaking point. I know that Caleb has the speed. I was a little surprised that I beat him just on how much running he does do."

Former Riverton High School track athlete Ben Gose and current Lander Valley High School track and field assistant coach finished third in 1:23.54.

"Ben is a great athlete and has a competitive mind from the success that he had in high school," Cartwright said. Travis Eddy placed fourth in a time of 1:27.40 and Stephen Smith was fifth in 1:28.38.

Ariana Lee finished seventh overall. She was the first woman to cross the line in a time of 1:32.15.

In the walking marathon, Lisa Dawson had the best time in 2:38.53. Mary Rabaey finished second (2:47.01), and Evan Fossen placed third (2:51.11).
