Wolverines travel to Evanston for regional wrestling tourney

Feb 16, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets Sports Editor

Riverton High School has an eye on the Class 4-A West regional wrestling crown Friday and Saturday in Evanston.

The Wolverines haven't won a regional title since the 2003 season but climbed into contention with a 4-1 conference mark this year.

"There is not one kid in athletics that doesn't want to hang a banner," RHS coach Jay Galey said. "It's just a matter of us being able to execute and surprise a few people along the way."

RHS beat Casper Natrona, Rock Springs, Kelly Walsh and Evanston in the regular-season conference duals. The loss was to Green River.

"The team race will be pretty interesting," Galey said. "We are going to be in the mix."

The Wolverines are No. 5 in the state Class 4-A team rankings. Casper Natrona is No. 4, and Rock Springs sits at No. 6.

Friday brings preliminary and semifinals in Evanston. The regionals finals are Saturday afternoon.

"I really like our lineup," Galey said. "The thing that I like most about it is that we have some younger guys who will surprise some people."

The top eight wrestlers in each weight class from regionals qualify for the state tournament Feb. 24-25 at the Casper Events Center.

The top four wrestlers from regionals will be seeded for state. The fifth- through eighth-place wrestlers will be drawn out of a hat for placement in the state bracket.

TJ Galey enters the postseason for the Wolverines ranked No. 2 in Class 4-A at 170 pounds. Sheridan's Lucas Giesey is in the No. 1 position. Galey won't see Giesey at the regional meet.
