Jul 18, 2012 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff WriterTanya Santee will be recommended to become just the second head girls soccer coach in the history of Riverton High School, Riverton schools superintendent Terry Snyder has announced.
Santee and two other candidates interviewed with committee leader and new RHS activities director Jeremy Hill last week, according to Snyder, and Santee's appointment will be presented to the Riverton school board Wednesday night. Her approval is expected.
Santee replaces Rick Bergstedt, who retired after serving as the head coach of the Lady Wolverines for 26 seasons.
The appointment of Santee follows a previous attempt to name a successor to Bergstedt which was tabled by the Riverton school board in June.
Since that time, updated procedures for the hiring of coaches have been refined and put in place by school administrators.
Santee has served as an assistant coach with the Lady Wolverines for the past eight seasons and will now look to hire two assistant coaches.
The RHS girls soccer team has been training this summer under Santee's direction.
"When we had the delay in the selection of the coach, she said she wanted to do everything she could to do to develop them regardless of whether she would be picked as head coach.
She wanted to keep them going," Snyder said.
Riverton placed fourth at the girls Class 4-A West regional soccer tournament and lost to Sheridan and Casper Natrona at the state tournament in May.
