Raiders season ends with loss to Douglas

Jul 27, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Riverton ace Johnny Souza threw 167 pitches Thursday in a consolation game, but the Douglas Bearcats stole a 13-10 victory in the American Legion baseball district tournament in Powell.

The contest was knotted at 10-10 after nine innings. In the 10th, Douglas scored three runs to keep its season alive.

The Raiders were the No. 4 seed for the district tournament.

The loss to Douglas ended the season for the Raiders.

Postseason games in American Legion games are nine innings. Games in the regular season are seven innings.

"It was as well as we have played all season as a group," Riverton assistant coach Cody Beers said.

Souza scattered 14 hits, struck out eight and had three walks in his final performance of his career for the Raiders.

"It was a real gutty performance by Johnny," Beers said. "I think that Johnny was riding such an emotional high. He was our best chance. His max is usually about 100 pitches."

Souza reached the 100 pitch count in the seventh inning. The right-hander had 67 more pitches in the final three innings.

Souza, Gerald Childers, Brady Beers and Nick Esposito aged out on Thursday.

Sheridan defeated Riverton 18-2 in the first game of the tournament.

Douglas 13, Riverton 10

Riverton started the must-win game on a positive note on Thursday afternoon in Powell.

The Raiders took a 7-3 lead in the first three innings.

The game changed when Marvin Malone hit a grand slam home run to tie the score at 7-7.

"Johnny knew that he had thrown a meat pitch on the grand slam," Beers said.

Douglas pushed three runs across in the eighth inning for a 10-7 advantage.

"Douglas had some timely hitting," Beers said.

In the bottom of the ninth, Esposito had a two-run single and Baylor Beers put in an RBI single to tie it 10-10.

Douglas had its second, third and fourth hitters produce the three runs off Souza in the top of the 10th inning.

Riverton ended the game with 16 hits, Esposito, Souza and Brady Beers had two hits apiece.

"Everybody that came to play for the Raiders produced," Beers said.
