Two Raiders earn postseason honors

Aug 2, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Johnny Souza and Brady Beers of the Riverton Raiders received 2012 postseason honors for their efforts on the baseball diamond.

Beers was named to the first-team North A district list and Souza was voted on to the second-team.

Beers landed a spot to the second-team all-state list.

The coaches and managers voted on the postseason awards.

"I'm pretty excited about it," Beers said. "It's a nice accomplishment to wrap up your baseball career."

In the regular season, Beers posted a .365 batting average. He collected 38 hits.

He had one home run, 12 doubles and two triples.

He knocked in 29 runs and crossed home plate 32 times.

"I was surprised that I made the first-team district team because we didn't do so well at districts, but enough coaches voted for me to get there," Beers said.

Riverton went 0-2 last week at the district tournament in Powell. The Raiders lost to Sheridan and Douglas.

"Powell and Sheridan has outstanding players on the list," Beers said.

"You have one standout from three or four different teams."

Beers and Souza both aged out of American Legion baseball after this season.

Souza was Rverton's top pitcher all season. He threw 167 pitches in a season-ending 13-10 loss to Douglas at the district tournament in Powell.

The game was deadlocked at 10-10 after nine innings. In the 10th, Douglas scored three times for the win.

"My arm was dead for the next three days," Souza said.

"The more that I thought about it, the more I wish we could have came out with a victory."

Souza finished the season with a 5-4 pitching record. He had a 4.68 ERA in 62 innings pitched. The right-hander recorded 58 strikeouts and had 14 walks.

"We were playing so well that Douglas game, and we did so many things right," Souza said. "We just happened to come out on the bottom end."

At the plate, Souza ended the season on a .338 batting average. He had 46 hits, one home run, 17 doubles and four triples.

"I wanted to get first-team, but second-team is still a great honor," Souza said.
