LVHS boys fourth at Riverton tournament

Aug 19, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Jackson won the team boys title and Cody topped girls play.

The Lander Valley High School boys finished fourth in the boys team standings Friday afternoon at the Riverton Invitational to begin the 2012 golf season.

The Tigers ended the 36-hole tournament scoring 679.

Jackson won the team title at 628.

"Jackson did a nice job at the tournament," Lander Valley High School coach Terry Berg said. "I know that they have two or three players that just shoot like the guys in Riverton did. They have seven or eight guys that can play."

The Riverton Wolverines placed second with a 657, and Evanston came in fourth in a score of 668.

"Riverton is a tough golf course," Berg said. "They had some tough pin placements. We were a little higher than what we should be, but we are OK."

Berg had a feeling the 18-hole golf course at the Riverton Country Club would produce some high scores.

"They keep the greens in excellent conditions and they are pretty quick," Berg said. "A couple of tough pin placements made it hard to putt."

LVHS freshman Trey Massey finished in rounds of 86 and 83 for a two-day total of 169.

"That is pretty good for the first time out," Berg said. "I hope that Trey will continue to improve and play well for us. He is a good kid, and he works hard."

Junior Casey Winger led the way for the Tigers after rounds of 81-83--164.

"All of our guys are good players," Berg said. "They are going to have some days where they score a little high, but they will have days when they play better."

Berg said he looks to bring players up and down from the junior varsity all season.

"We have seven or right boys who are pretty solid," Berg said. "We will have playoffs every week."

Girls

Jordan Hitshew paced the LVHS girls at the tournament, coming in seventh. Hitshew collected scores of 102-98 for a 200. Cody's Sydney Gunn won the tournament (83-90--173).

"Jordan struggled a little bit both days," Berg said. "She is struggling with her contact right now. That is something that we have to work on this week."

Hitshew placed second last year at the Class 3-A state tournament.

"Jordan chips and putts well," Berg said. "She is a good mental game player. She doesn't get frustrated."

Janae Hudson had a 36-hole score of 122-121 for a 243.

"Janae is coming along really well," Berg said. "She is hitting the ball a lot better. She struggled with putting on the second day."

The Tigers will take part on Friday and Saturday at the Rawlins Invitational.

"The Rawlins course is a long one and a difficult one," Berg said.
