Lady Rams can't find way to regionals

Feb 21, 2012 - Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

LANDER -- Any hopes Dubois had for a girls regional tournament berth ended in a scoreless first half Monday. The Lady Rams fell behind Encampment 26-0 at intermission.

In spite of a outscoring the Tigers in the third they never recovered. Dubois fell 46-16 to Encampment in loser-out "pigtail" action Monday afternoon at

Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.

The loss ends the DHS season with a winless record in 19 games.

Dubois just could not find the mark in the opening half on Monday. The girls struggled on nearly every offensive possession and played sluggishly on defense.

Playing a third game in 72 hours looked to be a big factor on a team with only five girls and no chance for rest.

It wasn't until late in the third period that junior Rachelle Leseberg finally hit a free throw to end the scoring drought. The shot opened up the Rams offensively for the rest of the quarter, but Dubois was limited to just four players after Summer Rivers left the game with an injury.

In a very classy act of sportsmanship, the Encampment coaching staff left five players on the floor but had them take turns sitting just inside the court in front of the Tiger bench and allowing the game to proceed in four-on-four fashion.

Emily Smith and Leseberg both took advantage of one-on-one situations, with Leseberg driving and Smith converting post up moves into quick baskets.

On Friday night, Dubois fell 64-20 in its final home game of the season against Meeteetse but put together one of the best efforts of the season in the opening period. The Rams cooled off after one and the 10 points they put up in the opening minutes turned out to be half of their entire game total.

On Saturday they made the long trip around the mountain to play Farson, and the Pronghorns were anything but friendly in a 53-19 defeat of the Rams.
