Two top-10 individual finishers put the Riverton High School girls golf team in the runner-up position by one stroke in the team standings at the Gillette Invitational golf tournament on Tuesday.

The Wolverines opened the 36-hole tournament shooting a team score of 306. RHS followed it up with a 315 for a 621.

Gillette won the crown at 494. Laramie finished third at 622, and Worland came in fourth in 650.

"The 306 was the lowest girls team score we had shot in four or five years," RHS coach Lars Flanagan said. "Getting second was a big thing, because a lot of those teams were from the other side of the state.

It was fun for our girls to compete with the Cheyenne schools and Laramie."

The Wolverines are slated to play in the Class 4-A West conference this year.

"We compete well with teams from our side of the state," Flanagan said. "Our next step is to compete well from the other teams from the east."

Riverton's Lincoln Horath placed seventh with rounds of 96 and 99 for a 195. Whitney Aschenbrenner was 10th (100-99 --199). "I anticipate Lincoln's scores to go lower and lower almost every tournament," Flanagan said. "Lincoln played a lot over the summer, but for whatever reason she didn't have a good tournament in Riverton. She played better in Gillette."Shaylee Cunningham shot 110 and a 117 for a 227.

Nirider fourth

RHS golfer Aaron Nirider turned in the lowest score of the tournament on Tuesday in the final 18 holes, registering a 68. Nirider had a 79 Monday for a total of 147 to place fourth in the individual tournament.

"Aaron is our most consistent golfer," Flanagan said.

"For him to get a 79 is somewhat odd. He is not going to have to back-to-back rounds that he is not happy with."

Laramie's John Murdock won the individual title after beating Cheyenne East's Quintin Pope in a one-hole playoff.

Preston Ward finished the 36-hole tournament with scores of 81 and 83 for a 164 to end up 10th for the Wolverines.

Other scores for the Wolverines were by Lars Becker (89-86 --175), Jordan Yowell (93-88-181) and Ryan Axthelm (88-96 --1184).

RHS will play Thursday and Friday at the Evanston Invitational. The tournament will be the third one in a span of seven days for the Wolverines.
