RHS opens season with swims at KW and Gillette

Aug 29, 2012 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

The Riverton Lady Wolverines swim team was back in the pool competing for the first time in the 2012 season last weekend.

RHS competed Friday in the Casper Relays, then traveled to Gillette to swim in a pentathlon-style meet. "Generally, these two meets are always a great way to get a look at the girls during pre-season. We learn where we need to work next," Riverton head coach Chad Fallin said.

Echo Parker was Riverton's top finisher with a combined time of 5:33.10 in the five pentathalon events, which are 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle.

"Echo did a great job in her backstroke and 100-yard freestyle. She is really close to qualifying (for state) there. Senior swimmer Karissa Kister in the 100-yard freestyle and 50-yard freestyle also performed well. She has her work cut out for her," Fallin said.

Sophomore Jordan Settlemire, a state qualifier last year, did not swim at the meet because of illness, according to Fallin.

Riverton did not have any first-week state qualifiers. Fallin said swimmers Kassi Kister and Kierra Muehler had good starts to their season. "At each grade level this year, we have strong leadership," Fallin said. Taylor Hill scored points for Riverton in diving.

"She did some things diving that we had worked on last year. She has worked on riding the board up to make sure she has the height to perform. With height comes time. We expect good things from her this year," Fallin said. Complete results were not available from the Casper Relays.

Up next for the Lady Wolverines are swims Thursday in Rock Springs and Friday in Cody for an invitational meet.
