Riverton runners get tough opening test on hilly Douglas course

Aug 29, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

RHS sophomore runner Olivia Thompson placed 14th in a time of 23:06 in the season opener.

Riverton High School cross country coach Jay Dayton called the Jackalope Invitational course in Douglas extremely difficult.

The 3.1-mile layout was on the hills near the Douglas High School football stadium.

"They build that course to be very challenging," Dayton said.

The meet was the season opener for the Wolverines.

"They started on the turf," Dayton said.

"Then we went right into the hills. It was winding and turning. There were a lot of turns back and forth."

RHS sophomore runner Olivia Thompson placed 14th in a time of 23:07. Teammate Jillian C' Bearing had a time of 25:23.00.

Thompson and C'Bearing were the only two RHS runners in the varsity division.

"We will be there by state," Dayton said.

"We have kids that are busy during the summer, or they are in different sports or activities.

Selina Ramsey of Rock Springs won the title in 20:27, and her teammate, Karlie Piaia, finished second (20:45.60).

"Everybody is struggling with the fact that the athletes are not in shape yet.

That is our big issue right now. We are playing catchup right now. We will get there by state.

It just takes some time for everybody to adapt to the training. We are a come-from-behind team."
