Packers, 49ers open RJFL year with wins

Aug 31, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

The Packers and the 49ers came up on top Thursday night in the season openers of the fifth-and sixth-grade Riverton Junior Football League.

The Packers blanked the Cowboys 22-0, while the 49ers took down the Bears 27-6. The doubleheader was played at the Riverton Junior Football League field.

"I think that it will be a good, balanced league," RJFL president Brett Watson said.

The 2012 RJFL will have four teams from Riverton. Two teams from Lander and one from Shoshoni. The league had to cut one team because of low fifth-grade turnout.

The teams in the league will play six games in the regular season.

"We have been running about six games for the season," Watson said.

The season ends in early October with championship week. The title game is Thursday, Oct. 3.

"They improve on the execution of the offense," Watson said. "I was pretty impressed on Thursday night on how they did."

Earland Thompson is the head coach of the Bears. Cody Beers is the head coach of the 49ers. Jason Campbell directs the Cowboys. Danny and Brett Watson coach the Packers.

"These teams will start to execute their base plays better. We will start to see some more plays added," Brett Watson said. "As the season goes, we will see teams starting to open up their offenses a little more."

"I think that we have a real good set of coaches," Watson said. "From top to bottom, we have one of the best coaching staffs that I have seen in the league.

The games in the league consist of 15 plays per quarter.

"I just expect all of these teams to come out with this with a lot of fundamentals going into middle school," Watson said."

There is a 110-pound weight limit for players to carry the football.

Watson said Lander's numbers are down a little bit from the 2011 season. The two Lander teams are the Tigers and the Bulldogs.

"At this level, it doesn't carry the same intensity as it does when you get into middle school and high school," said Watson about playing Lander teams. "Every year that I have done this, the kids to get jacked up to play Lander.

"Lander thought that they were going to have three teams this year," Watson said.

The third- and fourth-grade league will field the Steelers, Bengals, Jaguars and the Raiders.

The first game is Monday, Sept. 10.
