After the first two games, the Riverton Lady Wolverines' Thursday Class 4-A West volleyball match against perennial state power Kelly Walsh was even at one game each. But after that, the Lady Trojans used a scrappy, hustling defense and added some middle power that frustrated Riverton's hitters to down the Wolverines in Casper (25-15, 19-25, 25-17, 25-16) in each team's first conference match of the year.

"We definitely had some moments where we did some really good things," Lady Wolverine head coach Adrian McNamee said.

The loss bumps the Lady Wolverines record to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in the Class 4-A West.

"They have two middles with big old long arms that can hit the ball really well. Their defense is solid and they don't let many balls drop. That got our hitters frustrated," McNamee said.

The Wolverines fell at Kelly Walsh last year in three straight games.

"We didn't even make it to double digits in the third game (last year). There is definitely some improvement. I don't think we played our best game. We had some communication errors that we are struggling with right now," McNamee said.

Riverton traveled to Gillette late Thursday to play in an invitational tournament Friday and Saturday.

Friday's play will have Riverton in a pool with Sheridan, Sundance and Douglas. Depending on their record and scores in pool play, the Lady Wolverines will be placed in either a gold, silver, or bronze bracket in the 24-team tournament that includes teams from Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska
