Lady Wolverines play tough but fall late to Green River

Feb 22, 2012 - By Craig Blumenshine Staff Writer

The Riverton Lady Wolverines (1-22, 0-8) played one of their best basketball games of the season Tuesday night in Wolverine Gym but fell to Green River (6-14, 3-6 4-A West). The final score was36-31.

It was senior night for Riverton and prior to the game Marcia Ashdown, Kyla Randall, Kaylie Randall, Hannah Soll, Sheridan Smith, Hannah Svilar and Taylor Hunt were recognized.

The Lady Wolverines hung with Green River throughout the game and trailed by just one at halftime 20-19.

But a slow third quarter made Riverton fight from behind.

"Once again, we had that one quarter, the third quarter that stepped up and bit us. We were 0-8 shooting in the quarter," head coach Ron Porter said.

Trailing by six as the fourth quarter started, the Lady Wolverines played their most aggressive basketball of the season, fighting especially on the offensive boards to get second and third chances.

"I went to the boards hard," said Smith, who grabbed five offensive rebounds in the game.

Smith's field goal and diving save that led to a Svilar basket, followed by two Smith free throws had Riverton tied at 27-27 with 6:08 remaining.

After a Green River timeout, two 3-pointers from Shayla Strauss proved too much for Riverton to overcome.

"They had that little run late in the game. That dug us a hole that we couldn't get out of. That is something that we need to learn how to do. I thought we were closer to finishing than we have been in awhile and it would have been nice for the seniors to get a win," Porter said.

Svilar scored 10 to lead Riverton. Smith and Soll each had eight.

The Lady Wolverines will play their last regular season game at home this Saturday against Evnaston. Game time is 12:30 p.m.
