Rustlers 1-3 in Salt Lake tournament

Sep 2, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Central Wyoming College managed a 1-3 record Friday and Saturday at the Salt Lake City Invitational volleyball tournament.

The victory for the Rustlers came Saturday in a 23-25, 25-15, 25-12, 25-17 victory over Utah State University-College of Eastern Utah.

Salt Lake City College swept CWC 25-13, 25-15, 25-19 in the opening match of the tournament. SLCC is ranked No. 7 in the nation.

"We played some very talented teams and learned a lot about ourselves in two days," CWC women's coach Tiffany Stauffenberg said. "If we are going to be competitive in Region IX, we need to pass. We are good when we pass, and we are ugly when we don't."

College of Southern Idaho defeated the Rustlers, 25-11, 25-21, 25-19 in the second match of the first day. CSI is ranked No. 1 in the junior college poll.

"We had a lot of unforced errors the first day against CSI and SLCC," Stauffenberg said.

North Idaho swept the Rustlers 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 in the final match of the tournament.

"Saturday our passing improved along with our blocking," Stauffenberg said. "Our blockers took some pressure off our back row by getting hands on a lot of balls. We have a lot of work to do yet, but there's a lot of potential with this team. We will continue to work hard to improve."

CWC will concentrate on its Region IX conference opener Tuesday at Northwest College.

"We need to figure out some things in the next two days," Stauffenberg said. "We know when we pass and play defense we are good. Now, we need to get consistent with those two things and play at the level that we can play at."
