LVHS golfers earn second-place tie on Park County courses

Sep 2, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Five balanced scores landed Lander Valley High School into a two-way tie for second on Friday at the Powell-Cody Invitational golf tournament.

The Tigers finished the 36-hole tournament with a score of 649 to the host Panthers. Powell is the defending Class 3-A champion.

Jackson won the title scoring a 629. Gillette finished fourth at 662, and Sheridan placed fifth in 683.

"We had four low-80s scores," LVHS coach Terry Berg said. "They felt good about moving up in the team standings. Jackson has a pretty solid team. "

The Tigers didn't have any golfers in the top 10. Scott Kaufman led the way with rounds of 83 and 77 for a 160.

The 77 by Kaufman was his career low.

"We put two days together," Berg said. "Scott had a great round."

Casey Winger was next after his scores of 79-83 for a 162. Levi Stuttle added an 80-83--163. Other scores were from Trey Massey (84-80--164) and Dustin Clark (94-85--180).

"We have seven or eight kids that are getting decent scores when you have that pushes you to do a little better," Berg said.

The tournament was played on the Powell course on Thursday. The golfers switched to the Cody course for Saturday's final round.

"They are both beautiful courses," Berg said.

The Tigers head to the Star Valley Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The LVHS girls fielded a team of three members for the first time this season and finished third (596) in the seven-team field.

Gillette captured the title in a team score of 523, and Powell was second at 574.

Lander's Jordan Hitshew finished fourth in the tournament (91-88--179).

Berg said Janae Hudson is making improvement after the first three weeks of the regular season. Hudson shot rounds of 112-109 for a 221.
