Wolverines get singles wins on tennis court

Sep 5, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Two victories in the Riverton High School boys singles positions vs. the Powell Panthers proved to be the highlight on the tennis courts Saturday.

In the No. 1 singles slot, Riverton's John Kelleher swept Powell's Sam Prestwich 6-1, 7-5.

Joey Roseno of Riverton downed Jeffery Pool 6-2, 6-3.

Powell won all three doubles to pull out a 3-2 team win.

"We are very pleased with our singles performances up in Powell," RHS coach Mary Lea Wolf said. "

They still have things to work on, but we have a couple of weeks left before regionals to address those issues."

The Wolverines lost 5-0 to Cody Friday afternoon.

Souza hurt

Riverton's No. 1 girls singles player, Andrea Souza, picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win Friday against Cody's Jenna Parduba.

"Andrea had a huge upset on Friday," Wolf said.

Souza was ahead a set and a couple of games when she had to default due to a knee injury vs. Powell's Nina Berlin on Saturday.

"I'm not sure if this is the end of her season or not," Wolf said. "That remains to be seen."

In the No. 2 singles slot, Rubby Baca from RHS won the first set over Powell's Cydney Barrus 6-4.

Barrus came to win the next two 6-2, 6-1.

Wolf said the Wolverines ended their junior varsity season so they can focus on the varsity team.

The team will be running challenge matches on the boys side to finalize our doubles teams in this week.

"Our girls is very young and inexperienced so having extra coaching time and court space should help these girls a lot in terms of learning the doubles strategies, as well as working on learning the twist serve," Wolf said.
