WOODLAND, Calif. -- Wyoming head swimming and diving coach Tom Johnson was selected by his peers as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year after leading the Cowboys to a third-place finish at the MPSF Championships. The award is Johnson's fourth conference Coach of the Year honor and his first in the MPSF. The Cowboys also had 10 individual student-athletes and five relay teams earn First or Second Team All-MPSF honors.
Johnson earned the honor in his team's first year of membership. He coached three individual MPSF champions and one relay championship team. Sophomore Ethan Griffel won two individual championships (500 and 200 freestyle) and seniors Marshall Dilworth (100 backstroke) and Brandon Fischer (200 individual medley) each took home one conference title. He also coached the 800 freestyle relay team (Adam Kalms, Griffel, Ryan O'Leary and Jayce Calhoon) to a conference championship and MPSF meet-record time (6:31.62). His Cowboys placed third in their first-ever MPSF Championship meet, totaling 556 points. At the meet they set six school records and three MPSF Championship records. Their third-place finish was the fifth-consecutive top-four placement at their respective conference championships.
