Prison sentence in child porn case

Sep 16, 2012 - From staff reports

A Riverton man is heading to prison for more than seven years after a federal judge sentenced him Aug. 7 for attempted receipt of child pornography.

U.S. District Chief Judge Nancy D. Freudenthal sentenced Nathan Appledorn to 87 months in prison and 10 years of supervised release.

A grand jury indictment filed March 15 alleged the 32-year-old tried to receive one or more digital images of child pornography using the Internet. The charge alleged the crime happened around Jan. 31.

The charge carried a maximum punishment of between five and 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The U.S. District Court issued an arrest warrant for Appledorn on March 16, and police arrested him in Riverton and held him at the county jail in Lander, where federal authorities took custody of him.

During a hearing in Lander on March 23, Magistrate Teresa M. McKee ordered Appledorn detained during his prosecution and set his trial for May 29 in Cheyenne.

A few days before his trial, the court set for Appledorn a change-of-plea hearing, which happened May 29, the same day a plea agreement emerged in his case.

During his 30-minute sentencing hearing in Cheyenne, Freudenthal recommended Appledorn serve his time at a facility in Minnesota with a sex-offender treatment program.
