Feb 23, 2012 - By Randy Tucker Staff WriterIt was an ugly ending to a promising season for the Shoshoni Wranglers Thursday morning at Central Wyoming College.
The Wrangler boys fell 41-30 to Big Piney in a loser-out "pigtail" game, ending the Shoshoni season.
Big Piney advanced to an 8 p.m. game with Lovell later on Thursday.
Shoshoni could not find the range in the opening period, tallying just four points and missing a plethora of shots from all over the floor.
Big Piney eventually built an 18-7 advantage late in the half, but the Wranglers put together their best 21 seconds of the game, tearing on a 7-0 run to end the half. Jordan Whitener hit Josh Thoren with a wrap-around pass, then stole the ball and scored himself for a quick four points.
With just seconds left on the clock, Grayson Medicine Cloud stole the ball again, drove to the corner and hit an arching trey as the buzzer sounded to end the half.
Shoshoni sophomore Lawry Johnson hit a tough layup ending the third with the Wranglers trailing 25-20, but another run, this one of the 5-0 variety, came on a Thoren trey and drive from sophomore Mason Steffen that knotted the game at 25. Steffen drove and dished the ball to Whitener giving the Wranglers their only lead of the game at 27-25.
Seconds later Whitener took a charge from Big Piney's Jordan Sims but made a comment to Sims after the play and was whistled for a technical foul.
The momentum swung the other way after that, and Piney rolled on a 9-1 run to put the game out of reach.
Steffen and Johnson had their best games of the season in the losing effort.
The Wranglers graduate Medicine Cloud, Whitener and Nick Wright. Shoshoni posted their best won-loss record in 15 years under head coach Max Mills.
