Sep 21, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorJohn Kelleher and Joey Roseno are two dangerous tennis players for Riverton High School.
Kelleher has been playing in the No. 1 singles position, Roseno No. 2.
The pair started play Friday at the Class 4-A North tennis tournament in Gillette.
"Our strengths are our singles players," Riverton High School tennis coach Mary Lea Wolf said. "We are looking to see what the singles players have improved on."
The postseason tournament is a double-elimination format.
"Both of them are really working on the strategy aspect," Wolf said. "Both of them have the strokes down."
Kelleher and Roseno ended the regular season last Friday, Sept. 14, beating Kelly Walsh opponents. Kelleher swept Ben Brus 7-6, 6-3. Roseno cruised past Tom Ladd 6-0, 6-1.
"John has figured out sometimes that you have to take a player out of their game," Wolf said. "If you have a player that is just pounding the ball, you can slow the game down."
RHS, Sheridan, Powell, Casper Natrona, Kelly Walsh, Jackson, Cody and Gillette are in the 4-A North conference.
The 4-A South includes Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East, Green River, Laramie, Rawlins, Rock Springs, Cheyenne South and Torrington.
"In tennis, the north is the strong side," Wolf said. "We are playing kids that come from huge schools. We are playing kids that have a lot of tournament experience."
Wolf said Roseno and Kelleher are in the middle of the bracket to start the tournament.
"They will both be starting with players on their level," Wolf said. "It could go either way in the opening round."
All players qualify for the state tournament. State is Sept. 27-29 in Gillette.
The RHS doubles tandem of David Gard and Jonathan Frayley is in the No. 1 position.
Virgil Morrison and Bradley Branson play in the No. 2 doubles bracket.
"That pair has improved the most out of my doubles team," Wolf said.
"Virgil has improved his first serve, where he is getting more consistent on getting his first serve in.
That is so important. You have to win your service games."
Against Casper Natrona, Morrison and Branson outlasted the Natrona team of Brandon Dejongh and Jake Schmidt last week 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
That match was the only victory for RHS on either the boys and girls side vs. the Mustangs.
"I'm looking forward to seeing Bradley play next year," Wolf said. "He is a steady player, and he is one of those smart guys that can figure out the game."
Than Esposito and Sam Winter have been assigned to the No. 3 doubles position.
For the RHS girls, Andrea Souza is the No. 1 singles player. Ruby Baca is No. 2. KayLee Lawrence and Maxin Lawson are in the No. 1 doubles bracket. Christina Lithicum and McKenna Christopherson play No. 2 doubles. Alex Verosky and Fallyn Richmond are the No. 3 doubles team.
