Feb 23, 2012 - By Randy Tucker Staff WriterIn a brutal, foul plagued affair Thursday morning, Thermopolis pulled away from Wind River to take 45-33 opening round win in Class 2-A West Regional girls basketball action at Riverton High School.
The loss sends the Lady Cougars to a Friday morning loser out game against the Riverside Rebels at 9 a.m. at Riverton High School. Thermopolis plays at 3 p.m. Friday in the tournament semifinal.
Wind River scored quickly on a Brett Groesbeck jumper and a 3-pointer from Kelsi Davidson to take an early 5-4 lead, but they went cold after that and trailed 11-7 at the first break.
Wind River had trouble passing the ball throughout the game, but the first half was a display of unforced errors. The Cougars threw the ball into the stands, off the wall or directly to Thermopolis players seven times in the opening period and had eight more turnovers in the second.
In spite of the 15 misguided passes, Wind River kept it close because Thermopolis could hit free throws. The Bobcats missed shot after shot from the charity stripe and could have taken a double-digit lead.
Wind River trailed 19-13 at the half.
The Bobcats jumped to that double-digit lead with 4:41 left in the third and in spite of technical foul on Thermopolis head coach Brett Hoover for excessive complaining, the Cougars were unable to cut the lead.
A layup by Thermopolis guard Kylie Fisher just beat the buzzer to end the third with Thermopolis leading 35-21.
Amanda C'Bearing pushed the ball throughout the second half and drew a multitude of fouls. She hit nine of 14 from the line and tallied 13 points to lead the Wind River effort
