Feb 24, 2012 - By Randy Tucker Staff WriterYou might call it a slow start, or you might say it was opening-round jitters.
Whatever it was, Shoshoni and Riverside played to a nearly scoreless first period in opening round girls Class 2-A regional basketball action Thursday afternoon. The Wranglers tallied just three free throws in the opening eight minutes of play, and Riverside didn't score at all.
The Wranglers eventually came untracked behind a 40-point second half to run away from the Rebels 53-23.
Shoshoni advanced to a 3 p.m. semifinal against Thermopolis at Wolverine Gym, while the Rebels play a loser-out game with Wind River at 9 a.m. on the same floor.
Two free throws from senior Coralee Spratt and another from freshman Olivia Thompson highlighted a poorly played opening period for both squads.
Shoshoni played better in the second and led by nine on balanced scoring. paced by five points from Thompson.
The Wranglers fouled just a second before the half, and Riverside's Michaela Tharp hit one of two charity shots to close the half to a very low scoring 13-5.
Shoshoni came out with a vengeance in the third period, rolling on a 16-5 run behind the inside play of Kolbi Pickinpaugh and Thompson, and the outside 3-point shooting of Kiyana Martin and Tennell Parrish.
When the period closed, Shoshoni looked much more like the Southwest conference champion behind a 36-15 lead.
Balanced scoring in the final eight minutes saw six different Wranglers score. Spratt hit a trey before exiting with the other starters, and Shoshoni's bench finished out the game.
Pickinpaugh paced Shoshoni with 12 points behind excellent post play in the paint. Olivia Thompson tallied 10 with Spratt adding nine.
