Cougar girls withstand Riverside's comeback

Feb 24, 2012 - By Randy Tucker Staff Writer

Wind River's girls survived a frenetic comeback by the Lady Rebels of Riverside Friday morning to stay alive in the West Regional 2-A tournament.

The Cougars built a 12-point advantage early in the final period only to see it evaporate in a late run by the Rebels. Wind River held on for a 59-54 win to advance to a Saturday morning challenge game against the loser of Friday's semi-final between Wyoming Indian and Lovell.

If the Chiefs win, the Cougars will play Lovell at Central Wyoming College. If the Bulldogs prevail, the game will be at Riverton High School. No matter the venue, the game will be played at 8:30 a.m., with the winner advancing to the state tournament next week in Casper.

The Cougars trailed 3-0 to start the game but quickly recovered via a 13-2 run to take a comfortable lead. The Cougars rolled with six players scoring in the first, paced by five from Tristan Yellowplume.

Wind River held a 19-7 lead entering the second but the Rebels refused to fold and closed the score to four points with 1:28 left in the half on a pair of free throws from Brittany Vigil.

Yellowplume hit a follow shot with 20 seconds remaining to lift Wind River to a 30-24 lead at the break.

The Cougars pulled away again in the third behind a Tory Thoman trey along with five points from Josee Vogel and four from Yellowplume.

Trailing by 13 entering the final period the Rebels had the chance to fold but battled back on offensive rebounding and free throws to close the game to three points with a minute remaining.

Sasha Rollins nailed a 3-point at the 60-second mark moving the score to 53-50 with momentum clearly in Riverside's corner.

Riverside pressured hard in the back court but the Cougars went to the long pass, throwing over the top to Vogel and Amanda C'Bearing for back-to-back layups that briefly built the lead to seven.

The Cougars held on in the final seconds for the five-point win.
