Olivia Thompson is lowering her cross country times each meet for Riverton High School.

The defending Class 4-A state champion placed fifth Thursday afternoon at the Worland Invitational with a time of 21:05.97.

Her finish paced the Wolverines at the meet.

"Olivia is about 30 seconds faster this week," RHS coach Jay Dayton said. "We are seeing steady improvement from her week to week. She is moving up through the top 10."

Worland's Sadie Wassum won the title in 19:53.94, and Anne Brinegar from Cody was second at 20:11.47.

"Sadie is a pretty good runner," Dayton said. "Anne was right on her heels until the last half mile. Then the Worland girl pulled away. The Worland girl looked like one of the top runners in the state in Class 4-A or 3-A right now."

The Wolverines ended up third in the girls team standings with 58 points. Cody won the title at 22 points.

"We had great competition for Olivia," Dayton said.

Teammate Ainur Zhuldybaeva finished 22nd (23:52.25). Bailey Broadbent placed 29th in 25:59.06 and Camille Whiteman was 30th (26:50.81).

"Ainur has been real consistent for us," Dayton said.

Riverton's No. 2 runner Jillian C' Bearing was out sick on Thursday and didn't run at Worland.

RHS will participate Tuesday at the Wyoming Indian Invitational in Ethete. The Wolverines host their home meet of the season Friday afternoon at the Wind River Golf Course. The Class 4-A West regional also is in Riverton later in October.

"We just adjust our training for the week," said Dayton about having two meets next week. "We will change some things around. Monday, we will still do some light hills."

In the boys team standings, Cody edged Lander Valley High School by four points for the top spot.

Cody scored 44 points, and the Tigers were second at 48 points. Worland placed third with 77 points. RHS finished sixth (133 points).

Lander's Kade Simonson finished fourth in 17:29.38. Micah Whiting placed seventh at 17:44.18.

Freshmen Ben Zoller finished 25th (19:30.78), and Thomas Beasley was 35th (20:26.06) for the Wolverines.

"For the boys, you have to run against some of the runners that have been running for four years," Dayton said. "They are smoking that first mile. It takes experience to run a mile like that."
