Sep 30, 2012 - StaffRiverton had the star runner in 1995, but Lander had the stronger team. The Tigers hosted their home meet of the season in the week summer turned to fall.
As expected, Riverton's Bennie Ridgley, on her way to the Class 4-A state championship a month later, blew away the girls field to win in a time of 19:48. Ridgley won every meet she ran that season.
Team-wise, however, the young Lander girls finished well ahead of Riverton in the field -- fourth with 92 points to Riverton's fifth with 146 (the lower score wins in cross country). Lander coach Ray Candelaria's girls placed five girls in the top 28, paced by freshman Ari Lee's fourth-place time of 20:35. Other scorers for LVHS were Sarah Frye (16th place), Sara Nemick (21st), Lara Vowles (23rd) and Wendy Owen (28th).
After Ridgley's winning time, only Berry Bryant (12th place) could crack the top 33 for the Wolverines, and two of Riverton's five scorers finished out the top 50.
