Sep 30, 2012 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff WriterThe match was so close. Oh, so close.
The Riverton Lady Wolverines (3-4 Class 4-A West), playing the conference-unbeaten Evanston Lady Red Devils (6-0 Class 4-A West), fell to the league leaders in three straight Saturday afternoon in Wolverine Gym.
The score was 25-23 in all three games.
But if there is a silver lining (and there is), Riverton has room to improve and still hasn't played to its full potential, RHS head coach Adrian McNamee said after the match.
"I think we played well as a whole, but I also think that we didn't play with quite the spark that we had on Thursday. There is still potential that we can dip into. We are right there. Evanston is the best team in the state, that is what they say. We are right there with them," McNamee said.
The stats of Saturday's game back up the veteran coach.
Game one was all Riverton early, with the Lady Wolverines up 18-12 before Evanston crawled back to win. In game two, Riverton fell behind early but fought back to tie at 20-20 and kept it close at 22-23 and 23-24 before losing. And in game three, Riverton led 13-10,
was tied at 16-16 and again at 23-23 before Evanston finally won the match.
"I hate to live in the world of should've and could've, especially in sports. You either have them or you don't. I do feel that next time around it will be a different matter. I think our girls need to work on their confidence level and stay at that high energy, and we will do
better," McNamee said.
Sophomore Kiley Ridgway led the way for the Wolverines with eight kills. Kristen Bailey and Ashley Lynott each had six, and Amy Woodward and Haley Snell ended with five kills.
Bailey led the team in assists with 18, and Lynott had 17 digs.
Although Riverton has one home match remaining with Lander, the team recognized their seven senior players, Kristen Bailey, Miranda Hosking, Ashley Lynott, Bree Olson, Baylee Stafford, Kylee Trees and Amy Woodward and also senior manager Jada Hernandez prior to Saturday's match.
The Lady Wolverines travel to Green River Friday and will face Evanston again on the road next Saturday.
