RHS tennis teams 12th and 14th at state tournament

Oct 2, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Riverton High School's girls won three consolation tennis matches Thursday through Saturday at the state tournament in Gillette.

In the No. 1 singles position, Riverton's Andrea Souza opened the double-elimination tournament by dropping a hard-fought decision to Ola Zarzycka from Cheyenne Central. Zarzycka outlasted Souza 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Souza eliminated Abby Rich from Cheyenne East, 6-2, 6-0, in the next round.

Ruby Baca collected her victory at state in a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Elizabeth Wagoner of Cheyenne South. Riverton's doubles team of Fallyn Richmond and Alex Verosky netted a 6-0, 6-2, victory over a Cheyenne East team in the No. 3 doubles bracket.

All of the RHS singles players, both boys and girls, had to forfeit consolation matches in the next round due to disciplinary action taken at the state tournament.

The Wolverines finished 12th in the 16-team standings with 2.5 points. Casper Natrona claimed the state title scoring 49 points, and Sheridan came in second at 39 points. All the schools in tennis in Wyoming are on one level.

Boys

The two victories for the Wolverines occurred in the doubles consolation play. At No. 2 doubles, Bradley Branson and Virgil Morrison knocked off a Torrington squad 6-3, 6-2, for their victory at state. The team finished with a 1-2 record.

Than Esposito and Sam Winter pulled out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 decision over a Rawlins team to keep alive at state. In the next round, the Kelly Walsh squad eliminated Esposito-Winter 6-3, 6-2. The Wolverine boys were 14th (2.5 points) in the team standings. Gillette won the state title on its home course with 63 points and Cody finished second (40) and Sheridan came in third (34).

"I was really proud of the way my doubles teams played at the state tournament," RHS coach Mary Lea Wolf said. "It was hard to play against the north teams. We played good tennis at the state level."
