Oct 5, 2012 - By Katie Roenigk, Staff WriterPreliminary reports stated that the driver of the truck didn't know 21-year-old Sterling Blackburn was underneath.
The Riverton Police Department is investigating the Thursday evening death of 21-year-old Sterling Blackburn.
According to reports, Blackburn was underneath a pickup truck at the Cedar Bar, 413 E. Fremont Ave. in downtown Riverton, when the vehicle's owner attempted to drive away.
"The preliminary information is that the driver of the pickup was attempting to leave the parking lot and was unaware that (Blackburn) was under his truck," RPD Capt. Eric Murphy said Friday.
When they arrived on scene, officers said they saw the pickup truck on top of Blackburn, who was unresponsive and not breathing.
Officers tried to pull Blackburn out from under the truck, but they were unsuccessful, so the Riverton Volunteer Fire Department was called to assist.
"(They) used air bags to lift the truck so (Blackburn) could be released from under the truck," Murphy said.
Fremont County Coroner Ed McAuslan said Blackburn's body will undergo an autopsy at 1 p.m. Saturday in Loveland, Colo.
McAuslan was not sure of Blackburn's place of residence.
