Oct 10, 2012 - StaffDavid C. Bates died suddenly Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at his home in Lander. He was 84 years old.
Services are at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Trinity Episcopal Church. Charles Clarke is officiating, and there will be Masonic services. Cremation has taken place.
David Charles Bates born Sept. 1, 1928, in Greeley, Colo., to Helen Kelly and Wayne L. Bates and moved to Lander when he was 2 where he lived the remainder of his life.
He graduated from Fremont County Vocational High School in 1946 and attended the University of Wyoming for one year.
In 1952 he married Donna Eckard, and they had four children.
He worked for the Wyoming Highway Department for 40 years. He was an active member of Wyoming Lodge No. 2 Lander Lauder Scottish Rite, Korein Shrine Rawlins, Lupine Chapter No. 52 Dubois, Olivet Chapter No. 3 Order of the Eastern Star Lander and Lander Masonic Building Co.
He was a lifelong member of the Episcopal church and attended church at St. Andrews in Atlantic City where he was Sr. Warden.
His family said he enjoyed reading, fishing and using the computer.
He is survived by his daughters, Celeste Bates, Valri J. Gimple and her husband Steve and Sheree H. Slack and her husband Mark; son Kelly D. Bates; five grandchildren, Lisa, Christian, John, Ryan and Kelly; and one great-grandson, Laven.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father and brother Fred.
Memorials may be given to the Shriner's Children's Hospital, Lander Senior Center or a charity of the donor's choice.
