Oct 13, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Lander Valley High School finished the volleyball regular season with a four set win over Jackson on Saturday afternoon at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.

The Tigers won a 25-10, 27-29, 25-19, 25-16, decision over its Class 3-A West conference opponent. The LVHS seniors playing their last home matches of the year were Shanda Post, Kaylynn Cox-Mantlo and Jen Juvan.

Cody claimed a 25-16, 25-20, 24-26, 25-17, victory over the Tigers on Thursday night in Lander. LVHS had lost to Riverton High School on Tuesday at Wolverine Gym to begin the final week of the regular season.

During the match, LVHS received strong support from a large and vocal student section. The Tigers will now take part in the Class 3-A West conference tournament Friday and Saturday in Lyman. The tournament is a double-elimination format. The top four teams advance to the Class 3-A state tournament Oct. 25-27 at the Casper Events Center.

Official brackets for the West regional tournament will be announced later in the week.

A high seed for the conference tournament was at stake Thursday night at LVHS. Cody jumped on the Tigers in the first game, building a 16-10 advantage. The Fillies increased the lead to 22-15 after Post made a kill for the Tigers. Cody won the first set by nine points.

In the second set, LVHS picked up its defensive play in the early stages. LVHS had a 13-7 cushion when the visiting team called a timeout.

The adjustments were made during the break and Cody knotted the score at 15-15. LVHS was up 19-16, but Cody went on a 3-0 run to deadlock the score at 19-19. Cody added two more points for a 21-19 lead. The Fillies added four more points to take a lead in the match.

The third set was the best one for LVHS.

LVHS had an early lead of 15-11 and 17-13 to take the momentum away from Cody. Post delivered an ace for a 19-15 score.

Cody rallied back to jump ahead 22-21 to force LVHS to use a timeout. Lander's Codi Swenson added back-to-back kills for a 23-22 cushion. Swenson recorded another kill at 24-23, and Post put up two straight points at the end to force a fourth set.

In the fourth set, the two conference opponents were tied at 8-8. Cody had some breathing room in a 12-9 lead. The visiting team continued to stay out in front in the late stages of the fourth set. In the last four points, Cody controlled the front line to steal the road victory. Cody swept LVHS in three straight sets Sept. 29, in the first conference meeting of the season.
