LANDER -- Wind River dropped its opening round match at the Class 2-A West regional volleyball tournament at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse in Lander to second-seeded Lovell out of the Northwest 2-A.
The Cougars fell 25-14, 25-10 in the first two games, then played inspired volleyball in the third before falling 25-22 to the Bulldogs.
The Cougars faced the loser of the Shoshoni/Greybull match later Friday afternoon in elimination play.
Lovell dominated every aspect of the game in the first two sets. The Bulldogs drove the ball past the Cougar blocks and placed the ball strategically when not driving through the Cougar defense.
Lovell dismantled the Cougars quickly in the second game, taking a 13-6 lead and then rolling on an 8-1 run to blow open a 21-8 lead.
With the loser's bracket looming, the Cougars played their best game of the match in the third, exchanging early points before taking a 14-9 lead on solid play at the net from Macayla Arrington, Brett Groesbeck and Josee Vogel.
Darcey Maddock set the ball well for the Cougar offense in the early portion of the game.
Tenacious play by both teams led to seven lead changes and five ties before the game was determined.
Wind River's defense couldn't hold back a furious 5-0 Lovell run, and the game was knotted at 14. The Cougars rallied to lead by two and three points, but each time the Bulldogs had an answer.
With the score tied at 22, the Cougars hit the ball off one of the raised basketball standards twice and were unable to cover the play.
Lovell advanced to a semifinal contest with the winner of the Shoshoni/Greybull match.
