Thompson 12th at state cross country

Oct 23, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Olivia Thompson placed 12th for Riverton High School at the cross country state meet Saturday in Douglas in a difficult Class 4-A girls field.

The sophomore, who came in as the defending Class 4-A state champion, ran the 3.1-mile course in a time of 21:31.84 for her finish. The top 10 at the state meet earn all-state honors.

Thompson won the 2011 title for Riverton High School as a freshman.

"There was a little bit of wind, so the times reflected on that," RHS coach Jay Dayton said. "Olivia had a pretty good individual performance. She wanted to be in the top 10, but it just didn't come together for her this time. She is looking forward to next year."

Gillette's Abby Phillips won the 4-A individual crown in 19:55.57. She was second to Thompson last year.

Selina Ramsey from Rock Springs was second in 20:05 and Kelly Walsh's Andee Wilcox placed third in 20:22.95.

"We knew that Abby was a little stunned last year when Olivia beat her," Dayton said. "Olivia had a target this year.

Riverton's No. 2 runner, Jillian C' Bearing, didn't finish the race because of sickness and an injured ankle.

"Jillian just had pulled off after the first mile," Dayton said.

Ainur Zhuldybaeva finished 57th in 24:05.06 and Bailey Broadbent placed 58th (24:14.18).

"Ainur had a good run for us," Dayton said.

Brytan Spoonhunter was 72nd for RHS boys in 20:20.38. Dalton Perkins finished 75th in 20:32.85 and Thomas Beasley ended 76th (20:40.91).

3-A race

Lander Valley High School placed fourth in the Class 3-A boys state team standings with 135 points.

Star Valley had the best team in the division at scoring 57 points. Jackson finished second at 86 points. Cody finished third at 124 points.

"We just didn't run up to par at the state meet," LVHS coach Kevin Green said. "As a group, the race was one of the worst ones that we have had all year. It was just bad timing for us."

The top four teams at the state meet came from the west side of the state.

"We knew that the 3-A West was tough, but we competed close at the conference meet with them," Green said.

Lander's Kade Simonson crossed the finish line 13th in 18:16.51.

Teammate Drew Gramlich was 25th (19:04.98) and Micah Whiting finished 30th in 19:17.43.

"We were looking at two or three all-state runners, and we didn't get one," Green said. "We practiced hard and maybe I didn't taper them well enough."

Aspen Hemingway was 18th for the LVHS girls in 22:23.29.
