No. 1 Powell too much for Lander in first-round of 3-A grid playoffs

Oct 28, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Powell started its bid for a second straight Class 3-A state football championship with a 36-0 victory over Lander Valley High School Friday night in Park County.

The Panthers forced LVHS into seven turnovers in the opening-round game.

Powell is the defending Class 3-A champion. The Panthers won the Class 3-A West conference this year and is the No. 1 seed for the playoffs.

"Our kids came out really ready to play," LVHS coach Doug Hughes said. "Powell is a very fast and physical football team."

The setback finished the season for the Tigers. LVHS ended the year at 2-7. The Tigers were the No. 4 seed from the East conference.

"After the first couple of football games, we really played hard," Hughes said. "We were really proud of their effort against Powell."

The Panthers play Green River in one of the 3-A semifinals. Star Valley and Cody, which upset Riverton, meet in the other.

Green River scored late in the fourth quarter to escape with a 32-25 victory over Douglas.

All four semifinal teams are from the Class 3-A West conference.

The Tigers kept the high-powered Panthers scoreless in the first quarter.

Powell scored first in the second period after Hayden Cragoe found Carter Baxter on a 13-yard pass with nine minutes left to play in the half.

"We were struggling a little bit moving the football," said Hughes.

The changing point of the game happened at the 8:17 mark when Dewey Schwahn of Powell intercepted a 41-yard pass from LVHS quarterback Andrew Von Rein. The Panthers went into the break up 15-0.

PHS pulled away from the Tigers in the second half, as Cragoe hit Cory Heny for a 17-yard touchdown pass.

Vince Sleep added a 19-yard touchdown run, and the Panthers had the playoff victory.

"Powell has a lot of very good players that are athletic," Hughes said.
