Tigers second at state swim meet

Oct 31, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Lander Valley High School closed the gap in the swimming pool with Jackson on Saturday in Gillette, but the Tigers settled for a second-place finish in the teams standings at the Class 3-A state meet.

The Tigers scored 229 points in the 12-team field. Jackson finished first at 288.5 points. Buffalo was third with 174 points and Rawlins came in fourth (143 points).

"It was a good swim meet for us," LVHS coach Bruce Gresly said. "We knew that we had to go in and win a few relays. We couldn't do it. We swam good. We did a really good job."

Gresly said Jackson's wins in the relays were the difference at the state meet.

Jackson won all three of the relay titles. LVHS placed in the runner-up position.

"If we would have won two relays, then we probably would have won," Gresly said. "We were closer with Jackson in a couple of other swim meets."

LVHS won the state title in 2011, while Jackson finished in second.

Gresly expects the Tigers to continue to battle against Jackson for the state crown in the 3-A ranks.

"We should be right up there," Gresly said.

LVHS record

Lander's foursome of Sammy Crawford, Gwynaedd Howdyshell, Katie Forton and Anna Robinson shattered a LVHS school record in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:56.06.

The time placed LVHS second at the state meet. Jackson won the title in 1:54.05.

"Jackson pushed us to the limit," Gresly said. "We swam right with them. It was close."

The old LVHS record was 1:56.57 set in 2004.

"They didn't know until we got home," Gresly said. "They were excited. They all scored in other events for us." Morgan Gramlich, Emily Schimelpfenig, Forton and Anna Robinson were second in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:46.05.

Jackson took the title in 1:45.40.
