Feb 1, 2012 - StaffFormer Lander resident Robert H. "Bob" Heckert, 76, of Philip, S.D., died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at his home in Philip.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 1111 Oriole Drive, Rapid City, S.D., with Henry Meketuk officiating.
Robert Harry Heckert was born May 25, 1935, in VanTassel, the son of Harry and Grace (Messropian) Heckert. Later the family moved to Scottsbluff, Neb., where he attended school.
After graduation, Mr. Heckert joined the U.S. Air Force in 1955. He was honorably discharged in 1958. He moved to Englewood, Colo., and did various jobs before working for the city of Englewood.
He was united in marriage to Frances Meketuk on May 5, 1962, and a son, Michael J. Heckert, was born to this union.
After 17 years of working for the city of Englewood, the family moved to Lander, where Mr. Heckert worked for the State of Wyoming for 20 years. After his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Heckert moved to Philip, S.D.
Mr. Heckert was an active member of the Jehovah Witness faith for more than 30 years.
His wife, Frances, preceded him in death May 6, 2010. Mr. Heckert later married a long-time friend, Madeline Garnier of Pine Ridge, S.D., and they made their home in Philip.
His family said Mr. Heckert enjoyed many hobbies, including cribbage, crossword puzzles, trains, old Western movies and keeping in touch with friends.
Mr. Heckert is survived by his wife, Madeline Heckert of Philip, S.D.; his son, Michael Heckert of Westminster, Colo.; a stepson, Bradley Seydel of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a stepdaughter, Pamela Pinney of Rapid City, S.D.; five stepgrandchildren; a brother-in-law, Dirk Garnier Sr.; four sisters-in-law, Christine, Pauline, Louise and Suzy; special friends Cedric DeCory of Scottsbluff, Neb., and Henry Meketuk of Lander.
In addition to his first wife, Frances, Mr. Heckert was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Phyllis, Winifred and Peggy; one brother, Edward; and a special friend Dale Seydel.
