Nov 6, 2012 - By Katie Roenigk, Staff WriterThe Fremont County Coroner's office is investigating the death of 18-month-old Derek Meeks Jr., who died Monday after being struck by a vehicle Saturday off of Gas Hills Road.
"He was accidentally backed over, or driven over, by a vehicle," Fremont County Coroner Ed McAuslan said. "I believe it was a relative (driving)."
The incident already has been ruled an accident by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which handles cases on the Wind River Indian Reservation.
McAuslan said the child died at Children's Hospital of Denver as the result of trauma from the accident.
He did not have further information about the case, which he received on Monday.
"It's something we're picking up," McAuslan said. "We're just starting to gather our information."
McCauslan said he would continue the investigation along with the FBI, the Wind River Police Department and the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
